Yunanistan’a daha öncesinde proje kapsamında Atina ve Selanik’e gitmiştim ama bu sefer şansımı Batı Trakya tarafından kullanmak istedim.

Sabah saatinde İskeçe’ye varıyorum. Önce Hürriyet Camiisine gidiyorum. Sonrasında caminin imamı Muharrem Abim ile şehri kuşbaşı izlenilen noktaya çıkıyoruz. Bana İskeçe’nin tarihini anlatmaya başlıyor. Oraya kadar gelmişken iskeleti çıkmış bir köprüye beni götürüyor ve diyor ki işte biz nereden nereye geldik, biz böyle sahipsiz burada kaldık diyor ve oradaki kardeşlerimize bunu göster diyor ve ben de sizinle fotoğrafını paylaşıyorum.

Şehirde iki tane müftü var, biri devlet tarafından kabul edilen ve iki camiye bağlı olan. Baba müftü vefat edince oğlu müftü yerine geçiyor şehrin en büyük ve tarihi mirası camiisini şu an çok öğrencisinin okumadığı bir üniversite olarak değişime izin veriyor. Gayriresmi müftülük yaklaşık 80 camiyi himaye ediyor. Müftülüğü ziyaret edişimizde Kur’an faaliyetlerine İskeçe halkının çok rağbet ettiğinden bahsediliyor. Önceleri nikahların Müftülük tarafından kıyılmasına izin verildiği ama son dönemden bunun kaldırıldığı bilgisini paylaştılar. Türkiye’yi yakından takip ettiklerini ve duacısı olduklarını bizlere iletiyorlar.

Daha sonra mahkeme tarafından haklı bulunulsa da resmiyet hakkı verilmemiş İskeçe Türk Ocağına gidiyoruz. Burada çeşitli ücretsiz kurs eğitimleri veriliyor. İskeçe öğrenci nüfusunun %80’i üniversite hayatını Türkiye’de devam etmeyi tercih ediyor, bu konuda da Türk Ocağı öğrencilere rehberlik hizmeti veriyor. Orada yapılmış bir köşe görüyorum,  Çengelköy’de şehit olmuş Mustafa Cambaz’ın köşesi, kilometrelerce ötede bu şekilde onu anmak beni derinden etkiliyor.

Bir sonraki durak Batı Trakya Türk’lerinin sesi Millet Gazetesi. Önce Bilal Bey ile karşılıyor ve sohbete başlıyoruz. Daha sonrasında Genel Yayın Yönetmeni Cengiz Ömer Bey ile tanışıyoruz. Belki yüzlerce kitapta edineceğim Batı Trakya Türkleri hakkındaki bilgiyi şuradaki birkaç saatlik dopdolu sohbetin içinde ediniyorum. İsminden ve kalemlerinin güçlü olmasından dolayı Yunan devleti tarafından çok uyarılar ve cezalar aldığı, ayrıca yakından takip edildiğini öğreniyoruz. Türklerin azınlık statüsünde kalması için Yunan Hükümetinin Pomak Türklerini kabul etmek istemediğinden bahsediliyor. Türkiye’de Avrupa’daki Türkler denilince aklımıza gelen ilk gurbetçi Türkler olduğu, oysa mübadele ile kalan buradaki Türklerin burada yıllardır kültürünü ve dilini kaybetmeden yaşadıklarını dile getiriyor.

Cengiz Bey, 15 Temmuz yaşandığında tevafuki Türkiye’deymiş ve de darbe girişimine bizzat tanıklık edenlerden biri. Bizlere güzel bir sözü var, Türkiye hapşırsa biz burada zatüre oluruz, Türkiye’nin ulusal anlamda dik duruşu inanın burada hepimizin dik durabilmesi ve özgüvenimizin yerine gelmesi şeklinde cereyan ediyor, bu yüzden dualarımızın bir yerinde hep Türkiye var, bizler sınırın öteki tarafında kalmış Türk kardeşleriniziz.

Bir sonraki gün sırtında kemerleri, tepesinde kalesi olan Kavala’da kendimi buluyorum. Şehirde Osmanlı mimarili ve arnavut taşlı yolların dışında bir İskenderiye havası hissediyorum. Sakin ve şirin olan bu şehir denilince akla ilk gelen şeylerden Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa. Kısaca olayı hatırlamak istersek bir isyanı bastıran Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa vadedilen toprakları beğenmez ve oğulları ile Osmanlı’da başka bir isyan başlatır ve birçok yer kendisi ve oğullarına verilir.

İlber Ortaylı’ya göre kozmopolit ve sadece hükümdar kalabilmeyi düşünen ve Arap ulusçuluğunu kesinlikle temsil etmeyen bir validir. 19. yy’a uymayacak şekilde despotluklar yaptığı için (rastgele toplanmış binlerce insanı Mahmudiye Kanalında zorla çalıştırmak, suriye ve filistin halkını ağır vergilere boğmak gibi) asla sevilmemiştir. Sadece İkinci Mahmut’un yapamadığını yapıp vakıf arazilerini devlet kontrolüne geçirerek birçok ve Avrupa’ya bol bol öğrenci göndermiştir. Bunlardan El-Tahtavi denilen şahıs da ileri de Enver Sedat‘i bile etkileyecek olan Arap Milliyetciliginin kuramcılarından birisi olmuştur.

Tabii Kavala denilince akla gelen ilk şeylerden biri de Kavala Kurabiyesidir. Şehrin merkezinde 3-4 euroya paketlerini bulabileceğiniz Kurabiye için en güzel tadılacak yerlerden biri Kaleye çıkan yol üzerinde bulunan fabrikasyon olmayan Handmade kurabiyeleri.

Buralara gelmişken Thassos’a gitmeden olmaz. Feribot ile Kavala merkezine 1 saatlik uzaklıktaki yerden bu güzel adaya geçiyorum. Turkuaz ve yeşilin dans ettiği bu ada sanıldığından büyük ve birçok turiste ev sahipliği yapıyor. Ada genel olarak hareketli ve yüzülecek birçok noktası var.

Önceki günlerde İskeçe’de bir köy Türk düğüne davet edilmiştim. Seyahatimin son günü bu köye Muharrem Abim ve ailesi ile birlikte oluyoruz. Öğle namazı öncesi camiide kadınlara etli pilav ve ayran veriliyor, çevre köylerden de katılım olunca camii dolup taşıyor. Çıkışta haçtan gelmiş bir aile zemzem ve hurma dağıtıyor, düğün sahiplerinden biri de adettendir düğün şerbeti misafirlere ikram ediyor. Erkeklerin toplanması öğle namazından sonra olacağını öğreniyorum. Sonrasında gelin evine gidiyoruz, bütün eşyalarını ve çeyizlerini bir odada sergiliyor, ev dolup dolup boşalıyor. Bizler için çay ne demek ise Yunanistan’da gördüğüm Türk kahvesi öyle bir şey. Günde defalarca kahve içiyorlar, kahveyi seven ben her yerde kahve ikramı ile karşılaşıyor.

İskeçe’nin köylerini de geziyorum. Burada birçok Türkiye’nin köylerinden farksız yerleşim yerleri var. Aklımda kalan en güzel anlatımlardan biri de Karacaahmetli Fatma Hanım. Rivayete göre eşi ile birçok köye gidip köylülerin istemediği bu çifti Şahinler Köyü kabul eder ve tepede onlara bir iş verirler. Bir süre burada çalışır ve halkın sevgisini kazanırlar ama aradan zaman geçer bir anda kaybolurlar. Bunun üzerine onların adına bir türbe yaparlar ama köylülerin söylediklerine göre o gün bugündür köylerinde bereket vardır. Her köyün nüfusu azalırken bu köyün artmaktadır, ayrıca köyde yaşayan 7 tane iş adamı da vardır.

Sınırın bir parça ötesinde bizlere dua eden ve bizlerle bir olan bu kardeşlerimizi unutmamak ve yolumuz düşerse de onlarla kucaklaşmak bizlere bir borçtur, bilmenizi isterim.

I had been to Greece before in Athens and Thessaloniki as part of the project, but this time I wanted to take my chances by Western Thrace.

I arrive in Xanthi in the morning. First I go to Hürriyet Mosque. Afterwards, we go to the spot where the imam of the mosque, Muharrem Hodja, is flown to the city. He’s starting to tell me the history of Xanthi. When he got there, he took me to a bridge with a carcase, and he says, from where to where we came from, we were left unattended, and that told that please share these with our Turkish brother and that’s why I share the photo with you.

There are two mufti in the city, one accepted by the state and connected to two mosques. When the father’s mufti dies, his son is replaced as a mufti there instead of his father. The informal mufti’s office protects about 80 mosques. When we visit the Mufti Office, it is mentioned that the people of Xanthi are very much in demand for the activities of the Qur’an. Previously, they shared that the Mufti’s office had allowed the marriages to be solemnized, but that the Greek government had removed it from the last period. They follow Turkey’s agenda closely and that they are praying for our togetherness.

Afterwards, we are going to Xanthi Turkish Hearth, which has not been granted by the Greek government, although the court has justified it. Various free course trainings are offered here. Xanthi 80% of the student population prefers to continue his university life in Turkey, Xanthi Turkish Hearth also gives guidance as a service to students about it. I see a corner side there, the corner of Mustafa Cambaz who was martyred in Çengelköy, after miles away, I am deeply impressed to remember him this way.

The next stop is the voice of the Western Thrace Turks, Millet Newspaper. First we meet with Mr. Bilal and we start to chat. Afterwards, we meet Mr. Cengiz Ömer, Editor-in-Chief. Maybe I have learned many unknown things about the Western Thrace Turks without reading hundreds of books within several hours. We learn that the Greek state received many warnings for this Newspaper and penalties due to its Turkish name and its strong criticism and that it was closely monitored by Greek Authority. It is mentioned that the Greek government does not want to accept the Pomak Turks in order to keep the Turks in minority status. When we remember European Turks in abroad, firstly guest worker Turks are coming to our mind, known in Europe as the Turks, whereas after Turkish population exchange agreement who left here still live for years without losing their culture and language.

Mr. Cengiz, 15 July when there were in Turkey and one of the coincidence of personally witnessing the coup attempt. Calm and charming city of the first thing that comes to mind when you say Kavala that is Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Pasha. Briefly, if we want to remember the incident, Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Pasha, who suppressed a rebellion, does not like the promised lands and starts another rebellion in the Ottoman Empire with his sons and many places are given to him and his sons.

According to İlber Ortaylı, he is a governor who is a cosmopolitan and thinks only to remain ruler and does not represent Arab nationalism. He was never liked because he was despotic in a manner that did not conform to the 19th century (forcing thousands of people randomly gathered in Mahmudiye Channel as a worker, drowning Syrian and Palestinian people in heavy taxes). He did some things that Mahmut II couldn’t do and passed the foundation lands under state control and sent many students to Europe. One of them, al-Tahtavi, was one of the theoreticians of Arab Nationalism which would affect even Anwar Sadat.

Of course, one of the first things that comes to mind when we say Kavala is the Kavala Cookie. One of the best places for cookies is the non-fabricated Handmade cookies on the road to the castle.

Not until you’ve been here, not go to Thassos. I take a ferry one hour far away distance from Kavala to the beautiful island . This island, where turquoise and green dance, is thought to be big and home to many tourists. The island is generally bustling and has many points to swim.

In the previous days I was invited to a village Turkish wedding in Xanthi. On the last day of my trip we are in this village with Muharrem Hodja and his family. Before the noon prayer, women are given meat and rice and Ayran in the mosque. On the way out, a family from the cross offer to zemzem and betel nut, and one of the wedding owners offers the wedding sherbet to the guests. I learn that the gathering of men will be after the noon prayer. Then we go to the bride’s house, exhibit all her belongings and dowries in a room, There are people circulation in her house is full and empty. What we mean for tea is the Turkish coffee I have seen in Greece. They drink coffee many times a day and I, who loves coffee, gets coffee everywhere.

I also visit the villages of Xanthi. There’s no different from many settlements in Turkey’s villages. One of the most beautiful narratives in my mind is Ms. Fatma from Karacaahmet. Rumor has it that he and his wife go to many villages and accept this couple that the villagers do not want except Şahinler Village, and this village give them a job on the hill. They work here for a while and gain the love of the people, but they disappear in an instant. They built a tomb on their behalf, but according to what the villagers say, there has been plentifulness in their villages. As each village’s population decreases, this village increases, and there are 7 businessmen living in the village.

It is our debt to know that we do not forget these relatives who are praying to us a little beyond the border and who are one with us.
