Al Ittihad Park Station ve Palm Jumeirah Mall Station ardından nihayet palmiye adasının tepe noktası Atlantis Aquaventure Monorail Station’a varıyorsunuz.

Mall of the Emirates, Dubai, Birleşik Arap Emirlikleri’nde yer alan, bünyesindeki kapalı kayak merkezi Ski Dubai, lüks mağazaları ve devasa eğlence alanlarıyla dünyaca ünlü dev bir alışveriş merkezidir. Mall of the Emirates alışveriş merkezinin hemen arkasındaki mahallede yer alan Al Barsha Pond Park (Al Barsha Yapay Göl Parkı) vardır.

And now I find myself in the United Arab Emirates. To be honest, I do not think this will be a particularly unique travel piece, as the UAE is a destination that many people visit regularly and already have some idea about. Yet, as if the UAE’s naturally hot climate were not enough, the heat of July and August takes things to a completely unbearable level. Daytime temperatures can reach 53°C and, combined with the high humidity, can feel closer to 60°C. Even mobile phones struggle to cope with these temperatures outdoors, sometimes malfunctioning or restarting themselves. Walking outside for five minutes can become almost impossible. Your entire body can become drenched in sweat, with your clothes sticking to you. The streets are almost empty during the day, while in the evening, temperatures drop to around 40°C, making the air somewhat more bearable.

It is important to remember that what I have described reflects the seasonal conditions experienced in a country such as the United Arab Emirates during the summer. The other seasons are considerably more manageable. Temperatures average around 40°C between May and September, while they can fall to around 25°C during the winter. Bus stops are enclosed and air-conditioned, and air conditioning is practically everywhere.

I was actually in Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK for short, for a project. When I first came to the UAE, people told me that I would probably do plenty of shopping. Since that was not the reason for my visit, I did not really expect it. However, with little else to do in my free time, and with the comfortable shopping centres offering an easy way to escape the heat, there was not much of an alternative. It was also rather frustrating that communication apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram and Signal did not work.

For this reason, one of the nicest things to do in the RAK area may simply be swimming in the warm sea along the coast and watching the sunset. Apart from that, Manar Mall is a place where Emiratis tend to spend time and where, besides the shopping centre itself, there are various other activities. There is also the Every Day Center inside Al Naeem Mall, a supermarket where you can find almost anything, with a particular emphasis on Chinese and Indian products. A few shops in the same shopping centre selling branded products at very reasonable prices are also worth visiting.

When it comes to food, Indian cuisine seems to dominate the country. In the RAK area, Romano’s is one of the more pleasant places to eat. Saraya Istanbul, as well as the Lebanese restaurants, also offer flavours that are somewhat closer to the Turkish palate.

In Dubai, the iconic landmarks are fairly obvious. Since the city began its major urbanisation and construction boom from the 1970s onwards, it is remembered more for its prominent buildings and landmarks than for its history. The metro network is approximately 75 kilometres long and consists of 49 stations. A daily ticket allows you to use both the metro and buses, but as someone who lives in Istanbul, I somehow found the distances to feel much longer than expected. A journey that takes ten minutes by car can sometimes take more than an hour by public transport. More recently, there have also been persistent issues with navigation, reportedly due to security concerns.

When Dubai is mentioned, perhaps the first building that comes to mind is the sail-shaped hotel, Burj Al Arab. Right next to it is the public Sunset Beach, also known as Umm Suqeim Beach. You can spend a pleasant amount of time here. Once you pass the building, there is also a particularly good viewpoint at Souk Madinat Jumeirah from which you can take some of the most beautiful and distinctive photographs of the sail-shaped hotel — a little tip for those interested.

After passing Burj Al Arab, you arrive at Palm Jumeirah. As you make your way there, you cannot help but marvel at the hundreds, even thousands, of residences and the many unusual structures along the way. If you do not have a car and want to reach Atlantis in the Palm Jumeirah area, you need to use the Monorail, which provides an elevated form of transport. After Al Ittihad Park Station and Palm Jumeirah Mall Station, you eventually arrive at Atlantis Aquaventure Monorail Station, located at the very top of the palm-shaped island. Right next to it, Atlantis The Palm welcomes you with its elegant and striking architecture. A return journey to this station by Monorail costs AED 30.

Inside Atlantis The Palm, there are dozens of shops with different concepts and elegant restaurants. Beyond that, however, its interior and exterior architecture creates an experience unlike anything you may have encountered before, almost resembling the lost island described by Plato. The rear of the hotel and the tip of the palm overlook an apparently endless sea. At the front of the hotel, in the direction from which we arrived, there is a beach area and an entertainment space where the pool and the sea come together.

Another structure that inevitably comes to mind when Dubai is mentioned is Burj Khalifa. The area around it serves as a central meeting point with all kinds of activities. Particularly in the evening, the light and water shows create a memorable experience. Dubai Mall, right next to Burj Khalifa, can almost be described as a world of its own, with dozens of shops. Alongside attractions such as a dinosaur skeleton, an aquarium and a waterfall, there are also snow-based activities and unique spaces where children can experience different professions. From Dubai Mall Metro Station, however, it takes approximately 15–20 minutes to walk to the shopping centre itself.

Mall of the Emirates, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is a world-famous shopping centre featuring the indoor ski resort Ski Dubai, luxury shops and enormous entertainment areas. Behind the shopping centre is Al Barsha Pond Park, which contains a huge artificial lake covering around 50 acres. At the centre of the park is a striking fountain rising from the lake.

Another of Dubai’s most distinctive structures is the Museum of the Future, one of the city’s major museums showcasing humanity’s future and its vision of science and technology. In particular, its torus-shaped design and the inspiring poems about the future, embroidered onto its exterior and attributed to Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, leave a very different and striking impression. Admission costs AED 169.

On the other hand, Dubai Frame, or simply the Frame, offers a view of modern Dubai. Located in Zabeel Park, it is an iconic monument, museum and observation tower measuring 150.24 metres in height and 95.53 metres in width, holding the title of the world’s largest picture frame. Admission costs approximately AED 50.

If you have come all the way to Dubai and want to buy perfume or gold, the Gold Souk is one of the best-known places to visit. Located in the Al Ras neighbourhood of Deira, this historic market is home to more than 380 jewellers and precious-stone retailers lined up alongside one another.

One of the nicest things to do in the city is to experience an abra in the Creek area in the evening. By boarding these traditional wooden motorised boats, you can cross the water for as little as AED 1 one way. The journey takes around five minutes and takes you to places such as Deira Old Souk Abra or Al Sabkha Abra Station. Deira is one of the historic and oldest settled areas of Dubai. During my time there, I also had breakfast at Arabian Tea House Restaurant with my high-school friend Meryem and explored the historic market nearby.

Once you have come this far, a desert safari is almost a must. Tours starting from around US$30 pick you up from various locations in Dubai or Sharjah at around 4 pm and take you to a desert camp. There, alongside the sunset, you can enjoy activities such as climbing short desert dunes and camel rides. After an evening buffet, various performances are also held, turning the whole experience into a visual spectacle.

Since I had come this far, I also wanted to take a trip to Abu Dhabi. Tour companies offer day trips from Dubai starting at around US$30. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and, after Dubai, the country’s second-most populous city. Situated on an island in the Persian Gulf, this metropolis stands out with its modern architecture, rich cultural heritage, enormous museums and luxurious lifestyle.

The first stop on the visit was Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the world, with a capacity of 40,000 people. It is famous for its white marble domes and enormous chandelier. Its architecture, decorated with floral motifs, is truly breathtaking. Entrance is free, although getting there from the shopping centre requires a walk of at least 10–15 minutes.

Another highlight is Louvre Abu Dhabi, located on Saadiyat Island and notable as the first universal museum branch outside Paris. Yas Island, meanwhile, is an entertainment hub home to enormous theme parks such as Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld, although I only spent time at its shopping centre. Corniche Beach, one of the city’s most iconic beaches, was completely deserted because of the unbearable heat. When the weather is genuinely this hot, to be honest, you do not feel particularly inclined to explore either.

All in all, this trip, which lasted around a month, was a different experience for me, once the heat is put aside. Although the places I visited initially felt like parts of an artificial and somewhat soulless city, I can say that, afterwards, each detail, architectural feature and distinctive perspective gave me a different sense of vision. I came to understand the necessity of the shopping centres here much better. It is also surprisingly easy to find everything from very inexpensive products to extremely luxurious ones, and the variety of goods is enormous. In my opinion, it is a more affordable city than Istanbul.

In general, the foods I found easiest to eat among the classic Arab dishes were shawarma, falafel and dishes such as biryani. Not only were the portions large, but dishes containing substantial pieces of meat were also very common, which did not really suit my palate. Of course, as the country has such a strong emphasis on international cuisine, finding almost any type of food you might want is not particularly difficult.

Another thing I would like to mention is that I met people from almost every corner of the world. I met people from China, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Peru, Madagascar, Russia and many other countries. I would say that going to the gym is also very much a part of life here. Getting around without a car can be difficult, and public transport can become quite painful during peak hours. There are also separate carriages for women on the metro. Emiratis have certain privileges, and even if you marry an Emirati, it does not necessarily mean that you can become an Emirati yourself. In this country, where trade is such an important part of the economy, a large proportion of the workforce consists of immigrants from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In short, for me, the United Arab Emirates was a completely different experience: a place that offered new perspectives, a thoroughly international lifestyle and all kinds of unexpected surprises.
